Less contemporary, more Soul

"Maroon, Not Blue" Shot By: Ike Abakah of Connecticut

"Maroon in my blood, maroon in my soul..." When I Discovered that my ancestors were dependents of the maroon tribe of Jamaica I was automatically inspired to write a poem that reflected the strength and resilience of the maroons. This is my first time introducing my hidden passion for dance; it won't be the last.

Movement

Move, feel, and RELEASE

Dancing has always been something that I've found a tremendous amount of joy in doing. From the age of 6, I would observe my mother dance around the house to her favorite reggae hits. I would always instantly become inspired by her; her ability to wine, to shake, to MOVE!

So I practiced. Almost everyday I danced in front of a blank TV screen because that was the closest thing I had to a full length mirror. Little by little I started to embody my mother's movements; but they weren't quite like hers because I had my own unique drum I had to discover. Once I found my own drum and fell in love with its beat, I became a dancer.
